The Fat and Skinny on Fashion

This Spotlight Saturday MANNEQUINsf decided to feature blogger Jai Marshall from the Fat and Skinny on Fashion.  MANNEQUINsf loves to support those that are trying to make a difference through fashion.  The Fat and Skinny on Fashion is a blog focused on art, fashion, shoes, and the latest clothes for women of all sizes. Here is some information about TFAS for those of you that aren’t familiar.

The Fat and Skinny on Fashion blog was started by Jai Marshall in January 2009. This blog was founded as a hobby to showcase photography, music, fashion news, and art from the perspective of a plus size fashion journalism graduate student. Hence the name The Fat and Skinny. In the past year, TFAS has since become something more. Not only does TFAS showcase Jai’s love of fashion and art, but her obsession with shoes and the latest clothes for women of all sizes.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

“I am a fashion blogger, writer, photographer, stylist, lover of fashion and nerd girl from a town that thinks it is much bigger than it really is in South Carolina. That’s me!”

When did you become interested in fashion?

“I became interested in fashion when I was a little, little girl. As a toddler, I would watch my mom get dressed in the guest room she turned into a closet. It really fascinated me. Then when I was around three years old, I saw that George Michael “Freedom ’90” video and started watching Fashion Television. From there I became obsessed with fashion, supermodels, and the culture surrounding fashion.”

Why and when did you start The Fat and Skinny blog?

“I started TFAS in January 2009 as a hobby when I began my first semester at Academy of Art University. I was a fashion merchandising graduate student who was interested in starting a blog for years, but I wanted to plan it out a bit. After my first semester, I switched majors to fashion journalism with an interest in blogging and online media because I loved to blog so much. That is how my blog went from hobby to graduate thesis project.”

Who is your favorite designer?

“I have a ton of faves, but my favorite faves are Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Marc Jacobs. I think they are all very brilliant, and have moved fashion in a very modern direction. I really like Galliano too. I hope he gets his life straightened out. it would be a pity if he didn’t design collections anymore.”

Who or what inspires you?

“Lots of things inspire me like nature, fashion, patterns and prints. Art museums are great because they have so much to look at and be exposed too. I really get a lot of my inspiration from old movies, foreign films, and TV shows. I love looking at images, especially moving images. Movies are just another way to escape this world and step into your imagination. My mom also inspires me by the way she helps others, and by the way she dresses.”

What it is something you could not live without?

“I really love my cellphone and iPad. They keep me connected. I feel naked without them. Sometimes I have to turn them off and just get back to me, but I always end up checking them because I know that if I don’t….. I will miss something important.”

How do you describe your personal style?

“My personal style is eclectic. One minute I am dressed preppy, and then I will turn around and dress boho chic, or rock and roll, or however I feel like dressing that day. I just love experimenting with clothes because I love fashion, and I am a plus size girl. You have to experiment to find out what works for you.”

If you were not in fashion, what would you be doing?

“I would probably be a curator at an art museum. I have always been interested in jobs like that since I love art museums. It just seems like the most logical thing for me to do.”
